This course is ideal to follow on from our Introduction to Machine Sewing Course, especially for men who new to making clothes. This workshop also follows on from our Introduction to Dressmaking Course.

Basic casual items of men's, women's and children's clothing are more commonly made using jersey, such as Leggings, T-shirts, Hoodies & Sweatshirts etc. yet novice sewers are commonly nervous about exploring the possibilities of sewing with stretchy material. Our course schedule not only teaches you the skills and tips unique to working with jersey but you will also come away with two finished garments for you to wear and be proud of. Completing this course will open up a whole new spectrum of commercial pattern options and you will leave with the confidence you need to make clothes from any fabric without limiting yourself to wovens only.

The two day sessions are grouped into 1 classes per garment, the following schedule will give you an idea of what you will achieve by the end of the course:

Day 1

Make a long sleeved raglan top/sweatshirt for women with an option of necklines including simple round neck, turtle neck or polo. You can also choose to make this top longer and adapt the pattern to turn it into a jersey dress. For men we offer a classic crew neck T-shirt.

  • Measuring up and choosing the right size to cut.
  • Using commercial sewing patterns and marking the fabric, straight of grain in knits and cutting.
  • Explore the range of stitches available on a domestic sewing machine to finish your jersey appropriately.
  • Garment construction techniques & order of work.
  • Using Overlocking machines for an alternative way to finish seams (optional)

Day 2

Make a pair of sweatpants with either a slim or wide leg, drawstring waistband, faced pockets and ribbed ankle cuff.

  • How to measure elasticity to make a pattern for ribbing.
  • Work with different weight jersey fabrics.
  • How to attach ribbing to fabric.
  • Put all the skills you’ve learnt into practice to produce a more complex final garment.
  • Pick up skills where new techniques are used.

The patterns are complimentary and will be yours to take away but you will be required to bring your own fabric for the garments.

Please bring with you: A sewing machine and scissors will be allocated to you. We also recommend you either bring with you, or purchase from Ray Stitch, small tools such as pins, a tape measure, unpicker, needles, and thread snips.

Overlockers: This course will focus on how to gain a professional looking finish on jersey garments using your domestic sewing machine. In the second class we will give you the option to try using the overlocking machines to finish seams however, as this skill that is not versatile for those who don’t own an overlocker we will show you several alternative stitches that are achievable on your domestic machine including using a double needle.

If you are thinking about buying an overlocker after this course, then we also offer a class to show you in more detail how to work and trouble shoot these machines called Introduction to The Overlocker.
