LEVEL 3: Students for this course must already know how to thread up a sewing machine and have experience making a couple of simple sewn items such as tote bags, cushions, pencil cases etc. Ideal for those who have completed our Introuduction to Machine Sewing Course or equivalent Level 2 classes.

Materials: Sewing patterns are included, and each pattern has other garments and variants of style which you can try at home after you complete your course. For this course you are only required to bring fabric for the garments. The machines, equipment & sundry materials, such as basic thread colours and interfacing are provided.

Level: This class is suitable for confident beginner sewers who would like to start making clothes. 

In class you will cover the following techniques:

  • Understand commercial patterns and their notations (darts, notches etc.)
  • How to choose the right size to cut
  • Pattern lay plans & straight of grain
  • Marking & cutting the fabric
  • Different ways to finish seams
  • Tips and techniques on garment construction
  • Inserting an invisible zip
  • Hemming


Your choice of pattern is included but you will need to bring your own fabric. Requirements and recommendations are below:

Fabric 45”/115cm wide:- 1.8m
Fabric 60”/ 150cm wide:- 1.5m 

View B: 
Fabric 45”/115cm or 60”/ 150cm:- 2.1-2.2m 

Recommended fabrics: Medium-Light weight cottons, chambray, poplin, voile.

Gathered Skirt (Pattern Simplicity 1369)

Meterage is for Short / Mid Length

Fabric 45”/115cm wide:- 
Size 6-20 = 1.8m / 2.6m 
Size 22 = 2m / 2.8m

Fabric 60”/ 150cm wide:-
Size 6-12 = 1.3m / 1.8m 
Size 14-18 = 1.3m / 2m  
Size 20-22 = 1.3m / 2.2m 

Recommended fabrics: Medium-Light weight cottons, chambray, poplin, voile. 

9” Invisible Zip


Gathered Skirt (Pattern Simplicity 8211)

Meterage is for 18”-25” long skirt. If you’d like to make this skirt longer then add twice the extra length for the fabric. 

Fabric 45”/115cm wide:- 
Size 4-22 = 1.6m-1.9m

Fabric 60”/ 150cm wide:-
Size 4-20 = 1.3m-1.6m 
Size 22 = 1.6-1.9m 

Recommended fabrics: Medium-Light Weight Cottons, Chambray, Linen, Satin, Poplin, Voile. 8” Invisible Zip

 

Pencil / A-Line Skirt (Pattern New Look 6843)

Fabric 45”/115cm wide:- Meterage is for Short to Mid Length
Size 8-12 = 1m
Size 14 -20 = 1.1m-1.3m 

Fabric 60”/ 150cm wide:-
Size 8 -18 = 1m

Recommended fabrics: Cotton and cotton blends, needlecord, chambray, denim, twill, linen blends, light weight wool.
