Creative Quilting Workshops with Julius of House of Quinn

Level: Beginner/Intermediate. You should be proficient at using a sewing machine.

These sessions begin by learning a little bit about Julius' own practises, he will show you a selection of quilt work and inspiration to enable you to start thinking creatively about your abstract quilt composition.

CREATIVE MACHINE PIECING AND QUILTING
-
Using his own unique creative approach, Julius will guide you through curved quilt piecing and show you how to create a small quilted piece. Learn how to use a range of cutting and piecing techniques to create your own abstract design and then finish by hand quilting and binding it using the knife-edge technique.
You will cover the following techniques:
  • Composition and scale
  • Curved quilt piecing by machine
  • Hand quilting and finishing your quilt with a knife-edge finish (the Welsh way)
Materials to bring with you: Pieces of fabric that you would like to incorporate, to cover an area of 110cm x 110cm. Also a single piece of cotton fabric for the back also 110cm x 110cm. Wadding and threads are included.

ABSTRACT APPLIQUE

This workshop is an opportunity to deconstruct traditional quilting techniques and experiment with designing something personal to you. Learn how to use a range of hand applique techniques and create a unique composition that you will then hand quilt and bind to turn it into a wall hanging. 

You will cover the following techniques:

  • Textile collage and composition
  • Simple hand applique techniques and skills
  • Constructing and finishing your quilted piece ready for display.

Materials to bring with you: Pieces of fabric that you would like to incorporate to cover an area of 50cm x 50cm, plus a selection of pieces to appliqué on to it. Also a single piece of cotton fabric for the back measuring approximately 50cm x 50cm. Wadding and threads are included and you are welcome to rummage through our fabric scraps to see if we have anything that compliments your design.

About Your Teacher: Julius Arthur

Julius is a textile designer, artist and author of Modern Quilting - A Contemporary Guide to Quilting by HandHe founded his creative practice ‘House of Quinn' in 2014 and describes it as a place for exploration in craft, making and design by using traditional techniques and fundamental making practices to cultivate contemporary design narratives onto familiar objects.

Julius’s work is grounded in uncomplicated materials and processes and inspired by an abstract view of the places and things around us. Growing up in Cornwall, memories of childhood and a sense of home and belonging intersect in Julius' work. Assembled from cloth, paper and materials at hand, Julius finds joy in the process of creating with stitching, painting and print. Julius has an MDES in Fashion Design and Business and a background in textile & 3D design.

Please take a moment to read our cancellation policy before you book: Unfortunately our classes are non refundable. Due to our small class sizes it is also very difficult to transfer your booking to a different date. If you cannot attend a class and are able to notify us at least two weeks before the class starts, it may be possible to fit you in on another date but this is not guaranteed so please give us as much notice as possible to increase your chances.

In the event that we are forced to cancel a class, we will endeavour to give you as much notice as possible and offer either a full refund or swap your booking to another suitable date.
