Maximum Class Size: 5
Shibori is the Japanese art of manual resist dyeing, which produces beautiful patterns on fabric there were traditionally made using Indigo dye. In this workshop you will learn the traditional methods of stitched and bound resist including Ori Nui, Mokume, Maki-age, Karamatsu and Kumo.
There are an infinite number of ways one can bind, stitch, fold, twist, or compress cloth for Shibori, and each way results in very different patterns. Each method is used to achieve a certain result, but each method is also used to work in harmony with the type of cloth used. Therefore, the technique used in Shibori depends not only on the desired pattern, but the characteristics of the cloth being dyed. Also, different techniques can be used in conjunction with one another to achieve even more elaborate results.
This workshop focuses on learning the key stitches and binding techniques used in traditional Shibori. You will design and prepare sample pieces for dyeing at home using a cold water dye of your choice (included in the class cost). There will also be a demonstration on how to unpick all your finished work to reveal your designs!
All fabric & dyes are included.
This course is suitable for complete beginners, but all levels are welcome!
