Product details

Maximum Class Size: 6

Level 3: Improver - Confident with a sewing machine and ready to start making clothes.

Create a versatile top perfect for your summer wardrobe. With expert guidance throughout, you'll work through your chosen pattern and learn the key dressmaking techniques you need to start making clothes for yourself.

This class pairs well with our Pattern Prep Workshop if you'd like support with measurements, sizing, and fabric choice before you start. Book both together for £220 instead of £245 (discount applied automatically at checkout).

To make the most of your sewing time, we ask all stitchers to come with their pattern and fabric already cut out. Full preparation guidance is sent with your booking confirmation.

The patterns are the same ones used in our 6 week Introduction to Garment Making course. This class runs as a one-day workshop making it a flexible alternative if a six-week commitment doesn't suit you right now.

Booking a class entitles you to 10% off all full price products in the shop (excluding books) from one week before your class starts through to the end of your course.

Skills You'll Gain

The techniques you'll learn depend on your chosen pattern and may include:

  • Working with bias facings for clean neckline finishes
  • Setting cap sleeves
  • Inserting an invisible zip
  • Topstitching techniques
  • Working with elastic cuffs
  • Attaching ribbed neckbands
  • Basic hemming techniques

Materials & Pattern Details

The pattern is included and you can choose from the list below. You'll need to bring your own fabric, pre-washed to avoid shrinkage.

Puff & Pencil - Tie Blouse & Cone Sleeves

The Assembly Line - Cuff Top

Grainline Studio - Scout Tee

Merchant & Mills - Unisex Tee

Grainline Studio - Hadley Top

Fabric recommendations: Choose stable, easy-to-handle woven fabrics such as cotton poplin, lawn, or lightweight linen for your first garment.

Fabric requirements and quantities will be sent after booking, along with the paper pattern. Our team is happy to help you choose the perfect fabric in-store.

All sewing machines, thread, and tools are provided.

Cancellation Policy

Our classes are non refundable. Due our small class sizes it is very difficult to transfer your booking to a different date. If you cannot attend a class and are able to notify us at least two weeks before the class starts, it may be possible to change the date* but this is not guaranteed so please give us as much notice as possible to increase your chances. *Limited to one change only.

If you're running late, please contact us as soon as possible by email. Unfortunately, if you arrive more than 30 minutes after the class starts, we may not be able to admit you as this can disrupt the learning experience for other students.

In the event that we need to cancel a class, we will provide as much notice as possible and offer either a full refund or an alternative booking date.

Age Policy for Classes

At Ray Stitch, we'd love to welcome stitchers of all ages, but to ensure the best learning experience for everyone, we're unable to accommodate anyone under 12 in our workshops.

Young people aged 12-16 are very welcome in our classes but must be accompanied by a responsible adult (18+) throughout the entire session. The accompanying adult must book and pay for their own space in the class and participate alongside the young person. Students aged 17 and over can attend classes independently.

If you're planning to book for a young person, we recommend emailing us first so we can help guide you to the most suitable class for their age and experience level.
