Maximum Class Size: 6

Level 3: Improver - Confident with a sewing machine and ready to start making clothes.

Create a pinafore style dress built for the colder months in this focused one-day workshop. Part of our Sew Your Autumn Winter Wardrobe series, this class takes your garment sewing skills to the next level by introducing you to working with heavier weight fabrics.

Cotton is the easiest fibre to work with as a beginner because it holds its shape and handles predictably. Fabrics like needlecord, corduroy and wool can be trickier to manage due to their thickness, nap or drape, but they're still very achievable with the right guidance. In this workshop, you'll learn techniques for cutting, handling and sewing these fabrics while creating a pinafore dress designed to be layered over a shirt or t-shirt, a practical, wearable staple for autumn and winter.

This class pairs well with our Pattern Prep Workshop if you'd like support with measurements, sizing, and fabric choice before you start. Book both together for £220 instead of £245 (discount applied automatically at checkout).

To make the most of your sewing time, we ask all stitchers to come with their pattern and fabric already cut out. Full preparation guidance is sent with your booking confirmation.

Booking a class entitles you to 10% off all full-price products in the shop (excluding books) from one week before your class starts through to the end of your course.

Skills You’ll Gain

The techniques you'll learn depend on your chosen pattern and may include:

  • Working with the drape and characteristics of linen
  • Sewing bust darts
  • Constructing narrow straps
  • Creating V-necklines or keyhole back openings
  • Setting cap sleeves with elastic cuffs
  • Inserting elasticated waists
  • Making in-seam or topstitched pockets
  • Pressing and finishing linen seams
  • Hemming techniques for lightweight fabrics

Materials & Pattern Details

The pattern is included and are listed below. You'll need to bring your own linen fabric, pre-washed to avoid shrinkage and soften the fibres.

Sew House Seven - Sauvie Sundress

The Assembly Line - Cuff Dress

Fabric recommendations: We recommend a medium-weight cotton such as a printed poplin, shirt-weight cotton or a cotton twill. For a more challenging make, try needlecord, corduroy or wool instead.

Our team is happy to help you choose the perfect linen in-store.

Cancellation Policy

Our classes are non refundable. Due our small class sizes it is very difficult to transfer your booking to a different date. If you cannot attend a class and are able to notify us at least two weeks before the class starts, it may be possible to change the date* but this is not guaranteed so please give us as much notice as possible to increase your chances. *Limited to one change only.

If you're running late, please contact us as soon as possible by email. Unfortunately, if you arrive more than 30 minutes after the class starts, we may not be able to admit you as this can disrupt the learning experience for other students.

In the event that we need to cancel a class, we will provide as much notice as possible and offer either a full refund or an alternative booking date.

Age Policy for Classes

At Ray Stitch, we'd love to welcome stitchers of all ages, but to ensure the best learning experience for everyone, we're unable to accommodate anyone under 12 in our workshops.

Young people aged 12-16 are very welcome in our classes but must be accompanied by a responsible adult (18+) throughout the entire session. The accompanying adult must book and pay for their own space in the class and participate alongside the young person. Students aged 17 and over can attend classes independently.

If you're planning to book for a young person, we recommend emailing us first so we can help guide you to the most suitable class for their age and experience level.
