An Evening with Jessie Cutts: Free-form Quilts and Patchwork

Join artist Jessie Cutts, who works as Cutts & Sons, for an evening talk on her approach to patchwork and quilting. Jessie makes bold, colourful textile pieces using traditional quilting stitches, but without a pattern in sight. She works directly from the fabric, building compositions as she goes from scraps, trimmings, offcuts and old clothes, and lets the happy accidents of free-form stitching shape where a piece ends up.

Jessie will bring a selection of her work for you to see up close and talk through how she makes it, from collecting fabrics and building a palette to improvising lines and blocks. There’ll be time afterwards for your questions, whether you’re a seasoned quilter or someone who’s always found precise patterns a little off-putting.

Her first book, Free-form Quilts + Patchwork, is a practical and inspiring guide to making quilts without strict rules. It moves from loosening-up exercises into projects such as a hand-stitched potholder, tonal stripes and loose checkerboards.
