Product details

Maximum Class Size: 6

Level: Suitable for confident machine stitchers

Join us for a relaxed and free-flowing day of freestyle patchwork piecing with modern quilter and collage artist Sarah Hibbert. This wonderful improvisational technique lets your fabrics tell you exactly where they want to go, taking all the pressure off fabric selection. You'll learn to trust your instincts and work more intuitively, creating beautiful combinations without second-guessing yourself.

It's the perfect opportunity to give new life to those fabric scraps from other projects or finally use those gorgeous pieces you've been treasuring for just the right moment. Come along and enjoy a day of creative freedom where happy accidents become design features.

By developing each block organically instead of pre-planning, the workshop makes creating a quilt top feel effortless and enjoyable. The secret to achieving beautiful, harmonious results lies in choosing a colour palette with a highlight accent. Simply bring fabrics you love, and you'll create a design that makes you smile every time you look at it.

This versatile technique works beautifully for both structured grid patterns and flowing circular abstracts, and we'll explore both approaches during the workshop. You'll also learn essential quilting techniques and professional binding methods to give your piece that perfect finishing touch.

What You'll Learn:

  • Improvisational piecing techniques
  • How to work with fabric scraps and create cohesive designs
  • Grid and circular abstract patchwork methods
  • Basic quilting techniques for finishing your piece
  • Professional binding methods for a polished edge
  • Design decision-making and trusting your creative instincts
  • Options for turning your piece into functional items (cushions, bags, wall art)

Materials: A variety scrap fabrics from your stash, enough to randomly cover a 25” square area. If you would like to make a cushion, please also bring a 20" square piece of backing fabric.

Wadding, threads and cushion pads are provided. You can also help yourself to scraps and offcuts in the workshop to add to your collection.

Booking a class at Ray Stitch entitles you to 10% off everything in-store for one week. Our team is happy to help advise on fabric and supplies for your project.

Cancellation Policy

Our classes are non refundable. Due our small class sizes it is very difficult to transfer your booking to a different date. If you cannot attend a class and are able to notify us at least two weeks before the class starts, it may be possible to change the date* but this is not guaranteed so please give us as much notice as possible to increase your chances. *Limited to one change only.

In the event that we need to cancel a class, we will provide as much notice as possible and offer either a full refund or an alternative booking date.

Age Policy for Classes

At Ray Stitch, we'd love to welcome stitchers of all ages, but to ensure the best learning experience for everyone, we're unable to accommodate anyone under 12 in our workshops.

Young people aged 12-16 are very welcome in our classes but must be accompanied by a responsible adult (18+) throughout the entire session. The accompanying adult must book and pay for their own space in the class and participate alongside the young person. Students aged 17 and over can attend classes independently.

If you're planning to book for a young person, we recommend emailing us first so we can help guide you to the most suitable class for their age and experience level.
