Level 3: Improver - Confident with a sewing machine and ready to start making clothes
This two-day workshop is the perfect entry point into dressmaking using one of Merchant & Mills' classic patterns, all carefully selected as approachable first garments. With step-by-step guidance, you'll learn how to take body measurements, understand commercial pattern markings, and construct your own dress from start to finish.
Choose from a range of timeless styles, each offering different construction techniques and a beautifully wearable outcome. Pattern options can be viewed here. This class is perfect for building confidence and creating a piece you'll be proud to wear.
Booking a class entitles you to 10% off all full price products in the shop (excluding books) from one week before your class starts through to the end of your course.
Skills You'll Gain
- Taking accurate body measurements
- Reading and understanding commercial patterns
- Preparing fabric and cutting accurately
- Core garment construction techniques
- Working with facings, darts, sleeves, or gathers (pattern dependent)
- Finishing seams and hems
Materials
The sewing pattern is included, but you'll need to bring your own fabric. We recommend starting with a plain, easy-to-handle woven fabric for your first garment.
All sewing machines, tools, and essential materials such as interfacing and thread are provided. You'll receive fabric advice and requirements upon booking.
Cancellation Policy
Our classes are non refundable. Due our small class sizes it is very difficult to transfer your booking to a different date. If you cannot attend a class and are able to notify us at least two weeks before the class starts, it may be possible to change the date* but this is not guaranteed so please give us as much notice as possible to increase your chances. *Limited to one change only.
In the event that we need to cancel a class, we will provide as much notice as possible and offer either a full refund or an alternative booking date.
Age Policy for Classes
At Ray Stitch, we'd love to welcome stitchers of all ages, but to ensure the best learning experience for everyone, we're unable to accommodate anyone under 12 in our workshops.
Young people aged 12-16 are very welcome in our classes but must be accompanied by a responsible adult (18+) throughout the entire session. The accompanying adult must book and pay for their own space in the class and participate alongside the young person. Students aged 17 and over can attend classes independently.
If you're planning to book for a young person, we recommend emailing us first so we can help guide you to the most suitable class for their age and experience level.
