Begin your garment sewing journey and learn how to make a versatile men's or women's top. We'll show you how to read and use commercial patterns to unravel the language of dressmaking and prepare your fabric for sewing. We'll then guide you through all the stages and techniques required to make your own version of a simple but stylish top. Choose between two patterns and various different style options, including neck + sleeve variations.
Level: This class is suitable for sewers at a beginner plus level, and is ideal for those who have completed our Introduction to Machine Sewing Part 2 - Essential Skills class and would like to start using commercial dressmaking patterns.
In class you will cover the following techniques:
- Understand commercial patterns and their notations (darts, notches etc.)
- How to choose the right size to cut
- Pattern lay plans & straight of grain
- Marking & cutting the fabric
- Different ways to finish seams
- Tips and techniques on garment construction
- Hemming

Materials: Your choice of pattern is included but you will need to bring fabric. Fabric requirements and suggestions are below - we would suggest avoiding any fabric with patterns that require matching.
