A beginner-friendly 3-hour workshop introduction to thread painting, also known as silk shading. This traditional embroidery technique originated in East Asia, where fine silks were used to build exquisite, lifelike detail.

Using 6-strand cotton in a range of colours, you'll blend three tonal shades to build soft, painterly petals. Cotton is easier to split and handle than silk thread, so it's a lovely way to try the technique for the first time. You'll work on Ray Stitch's own washed linen, with all materials provided and no previous embroidery experience needed, and leave with a finished coaster to take home.

Taught by Islington-based embroidery artisan Tamsin Lines, whose work spans luxury fashion and bridal commissions, with a focus on sustainable materials and traditional hand embroidery techniques.

Tamsin Lines is an Islington-based textile designer and embroidery artisan, working across luxury fashion, bridal and bespoke commission work. She trained in Textile Design at the University of Leeds before completing an MA in Material Futures at Central Saint Martins, and in 2025 was awarded the CHANEL & King’s Foundation Métiers d’art Embroidery Fellowship in Partnership with Le19M.

Her practice centres on traditional hand embroidery, sustainable materials and reclaiming value in the discarded, turning waste and off-cuts into precious, considered pieces. She brings the same care to her teaching, encouraging stitchers to slow down, experiment and enjoy making by hand.

Our classes are non refundable. Due our small class sizes it is very difficult to transfer your booking to a different date. If you cannot attend a class and are able to notify us at least two weeks before the class starts, it may be possible to change the date* but this is not guaranteed so please give us as much notice as possible to increase your chances. *Limited to one change only.

If you're running late, please contact us as soon as possible by email. Unfortunately, if you arrive more than 30 minutes after the class starts, we may not be able to admit you as this can disrupt the learning experience for other students.

In the event that we need to cancel a class, we will provide as much notice as possible and offer either a full refund or an alternative booking date.

At Ray Stitch, we'd love to welcome stitchers of all ages, but to ensure the best learning experience for everyone, we're unable to accommodate anyone under 12 in our workshops.

Young people aged 12-16 are very welcome in our classes but must be accompanied by a responsible adult (18+) throughout the entire session. The accompanying adult must book and pay for their own space in the class and participate alongside the young person. Students aged 17 and over can attend classes independently.
