Product details

Maximum Class Size: 6

Level 4: Intermediate - You have experience making garments and are ready to add stretch and knit fabrics to your practice.

Working with jersey on a domestic machine requires a different approach to woven fabrics, but not necessarily an overlocker. This full-day class focuses on the specific techniques that make stretch fabric reliable and enjoyable to sew, from understanding how different knit weights behave to getting clean, professional results using what your machine already has.

You'll work from one of two Wardrobe by Me patterns. The Wardrobe Builder T-shirt offers a fitted silhouette with five neckline options, six sleeve lengths, and three body lengths. The Big T-shirt is a classic crew-neck style with a boxy fit and is well suited to medium-weight jersey or stable knits.

To make the most of your sewing time, we ask all stitchers to come with their pattern and fabric already cut out. Full preparation guidance is sent with your booking confirmation.
This class pairs well with our Pattern Prep Workshop if you'd like support with measurements, sizing, and fabric choice before you start. Book both together for £220 instead of £245 (discount applied automatically at checkout).

Booking a class entitles you to 10% off all full price products in the shop (excluding books) from one week before your class starts through to the end of your course.

Skills You’ll Gain

  • Understanding how knit fabric properties affect construction
  • Choosing and fitting a stretch or ballpoint needle
  • Using built-in stretch stitches on a domestic machine
  • Applying jersey neckbands
  • Twin needle hemming
  • Using Maraflex stretch thread
  • Adapting your approach for different knit weights

Materials & Pattern Details

The pattern is included and will be provided in advance to enable you to cut out your fabric beforehand.

A stable single jersey is the most straightforward choice as it has reliable stretch and recovery and handles cleanly under the machine. A drapier knit will give a softer, more fluid result, and a sweatshirt-weight knit is worth considering if you'd prefer a heavier, more structured top. Fabric requirements and quantities will be sent after booking. All sewing machines, stretch needles, thread, and notions are provided.

Cancellation Policy

Our classes are non refundable. Due our small class sizes it is very difficult to transfer your booking to a different date. If you cannot attend a class and are able to notify us at least two weeks before the class starts, it may be possible to change the date* but this is not guaranteed so please give us as much notice as possible to increase your chances. *Limited to one change only.

If you're running late, please contact us as soon as possible by email. Unfortunately, if you arrive more than 30 minutes after the class starts, we may not be able to admit you as this can disrupt the learning experience for other students.

In the event that we need to cancel a class, we will provide as much notice as possible and offer either a full refund or an alternative booking date.

Age Policy for Classes

At Ray Stitch, we'd love to welcome stitchers of all ages, but to ensure the best learning experience for everyone, we're unable to accommodate anyone under 12 in our workshops.

Young people aged 12-16 are very welcome in our classes but must be accompanied by a responsible adult (18+) throughout the entire session. The accompanying adult must book and pay for their own space in the class and participate alongside the young person. Students aged 17 and over can attend classes independently.

If you're planning to book for a young person, we recommend emailing us first so we can help guide you to the most suitable class for their age and experience level.
