Maximum Class Size: 8

All levels. No experience is needed, and there’s plenty here for experienced stitchers too.

Spend a calm three hours learning paper embroidery with Katy, founder of She Makes Things. She’ll guide you step by step as you stitch your own one-of-a-kind festive card. You’ll weave coloured thread through paper in geometric designs and build up intricate patterns as you go.

Paper embroidery is a lesser-known craft and a lovely one to discover in the run-up to Christmas. Your finished card can be framed or sent to someone special.

You’ll take home a how-to manual, so there’s no pressure to finish during the session. The session is about slowing down and enjoying the process alongside other stitchers.

Booking a class entitles you to 10% off all full price products in the shop (excluding books) from one week before your class starts through to the end of your course.

Skills You'll Gain

  • Piercing a geometric design into card
  • Stitching through paper cleanly without tearing
  • Building intricate patterns from straight stitches
  • Choosing thread and paper colours for the effect you want
  • Finishing your card neatly for a professional look

Materials

All materials are provided. You’ll receive Katy’s risograph-printed how-to manual, designed exclusively by She Makes Things, along with two pre-cut, pre-folded cards and an envelope. You’ll also have access to her “box of tricks”, a broad selection of coloured threads. Many of them come from creative reuse hubs, which shows how sustainable this craft can be.

If you have a particular thread or card in mind, you’re welcome to bring it along.

Katy will also have her limited-edition mini self-care toolkits for sale on the day, with everything you need to carry on at home. Her bundles of blank pre-cut, pre-folded cards with envelopes will be available too.

About Your Teacher

After studying at Central Saint Martins, Katy built a career in graphic design in New York and London. At Pentagram she worked with clients such as Channel 4 and the BBC, and her work has appeared in The New York Times.

A life-changing event brought her back to making by hand and working creatively with limited resources. From there grew her practice of paper and stitch, which brings sustainability and storytelling to a traditional craft.

Sharing this practice is now at the heart of what she does. Her workshops are a chance to unwind, make with intention and leave feeling a little more grounded than when you arrived.

You can follow Katy’s work on Instagram at @she_makesthings.

Cancellation Policy

Our classes are non refundable. Due to our small class sizes it is very difficult to transfer your booking to a different date. If you cannot attend a class and are able to notify us at least two weeks before the class starts, it may be possible to change the date* but this is not guaranteed so please give us as much notice as possible to increase your chances. *Limited to one change only.

If you're running late, please contact us as soon as possible by email. Unfortunately, if you arrive more than 30 minutes after the class starts, we may not be able to admit you as this can disrupt the learning experience for other students.

In the event that we need to cancel a class, we will provide as much notice as possible and offer either a full refund or an alternative booking date.

Age Policy for Classes

At Ray Stitch, we'd love to welcome stitchers of all ages, but to ensure the best learning experience for everyone, we're unable to accommodate anyone under 12 in our workshops.

Young people aged 12-16 are very welcome in our classes but must be accompanied by a responsible adult (18+) throughout the entire session. The accompanying adult must book and pay for their own space in the class and participate alongside the young person. Students aged 17 and over can attend classes independently.

If you're planning to book for a young person, we recommend emailing us first so we can help guide you to the most suitable class for their age and experience level.
