This friendly, hands-on workshop is Part 1 of our Introduction to Machine Sewing classes and the perfect first step into machine sewing. Whether you've never used a sewing machine before or just need a confidence boost, we'll start right from the beginning, getting you familiar with the machine and its basic functions.
In this 3-hour class, you'll apply your new skills to make either a tote bag or envelope cushion cover using Ray Stitch fabric to take home. It's a great introduction to essential sewing techniques and a satisfying way to begin your sewing journey.
Booking a class entitles you to 10% off all full price products in the shop (excluding books) from one week before your class starts through to the end of your course.
Skills You'll Gain
- Getting to know the sewing machine - threading, bobbin winding, adjusting tension
- Sewing straight lines, corners, and curves
- Using seam allowances
- Reading and using a simple paper pattern
- Pinning, cutting, pressing, and finishing seams with a zigzag stitch
- Making a tote bag or envelope cushion cover to take home

Cancellation Policy
Our classes are non refundable. Due our small class sizes it is very difficult to transfer your booking to a different date. If you cannot attend a class and are able to notify us at least two weeks before the class starts, it may be possible to change the date* but this is not guaranteed so please give us as much notice as possible to increase your chances. *Limited to one change only.
In the event that we need to cancel a class, we will provide as much notice as possible and offer either a full refund or an alternative booking date.
Age Policy for Classes
At Ray Stitch, we'd love to welcome stitchers of all ages, but to ensure the best learning experience for everyone, we're unable to accommodate anyone under 12 in our workshops.
Young people aged 12-16 are very welcome in our classes but must be accompanied by a responsible adult (18+) throughout the entire session. The accompanying adult must book and pay for their own space in the class and participate alongside the young person. Students aged 17 and over can attend classes independently.
If you're planning to book for a young person, we recommend emailing us first so we can help guide you to the most suitable class for their age and experience level.
