Product details
Maximum Class Size: 6
Level 4 - Intermediate: For experienced garment makers looking to advance their skills.
Join us for a weekend of slow sewing and creative exploration as you make your own quilted jacket using the much-loved Hovea Jacket pattern by Megan Nielsen. This relaxed-fit, drop-shoulder design includes options for length, collar, pockets, and belt, allowing you to personalise your project and enjoy the process of quilting your own fabric from start to finish.
You'll learn how to work with layered fabrics using a walking foot and explore simple quilting techniques that can be adapted to suit your style. Whether you go bold with print, tonal with texture, or refined with classic cottons, this is a chance to make something beautifully personal and practical.
Please note: This is a fast-paced class. With good preparation and focus, you'll get close to finishing your jacket, but full completion may require a few finishing touches at home or in a follow-up Open Sewing session.
Booking a class entitles you to 10% off all full price products in the shop (excluding books) from one week before your class starts through to the end of your course.
Skills You'll Gain
- Constructing and quilting your own fabric
- Working with layered materials using a walking foot
- Jacket assembly techniques (seam construction, topstitching, edge finishing)
- Inserting pockets and optional belt
- Finishing techniques for a polished look
Materials
The pattern is included, but you’ll need to buy your fabric. You'll be quilting your own fabric for this project, so you'll need double the quantity of fabric to account for both inner and outer layers. Recommended fabrics include lightweight cottons, quilting-weight cottons, and lightweight denims. Avoid anything stretchy, shiny, or too drapey.
Once you've booked, we'll send full fabric requirements based on your chosen view and size.
You're welcome to bring your own sewing machine if you'd prefer, but please ensure it's compatible with a walking foot and bring the foot with you. You're also very welcome to use our studio machines, which are fitted with walking feet.
Preparation
To maximise your sewing time during the weekend, please arrive with your pattern and fabric pre-cut. We'll send detailed preparation guidance with your booking confirmation, so wait for this email before cutting your fabric to ensure you have all the information you need.
Cancellation Policy
Our classes are non refundable. Due our small class sizes it is very difficult to transfer your booking to a different date. If you cannot attend a class and are able to notify us at least two weeks before the class starts, it may be possible to change the date* but this is not guaranteed so please give us as much notice as possible to increase your chances. *Limited to one change only.
In the event that we need to cancel a class, we will provide as much notice as possible and offer either a full refund or an alternative booking date.
Age Policy for Classes
At Ray Stitch, we'd love to welcome stitchers of all ages, but to ensure the best learning experience for everyone, we're unable to accommodate anyone under 12 in our workshops.
Young people aged 12-16 are very welcome in our classes but must be accompanied by a responsible adult (18+) throughout the entire session. The accompanying adult must book and pay for their own space in the class and participate alongside the young person. Students aged 17 and over can attend classes independently.
If you're planning to book for a young person, we recommend emailing us first so we can help guide you to the most suitable class for their age and experience level.
