Product details

Maximum Class Size: 6

Level 4: Intermediate. You've made several garments and are ready to take on more involved construction.

Stitch a hard-wearing overshirt in a heavier fabric, the kind of chore jacket you'll wear from late summer well into winter. There are two patterns to choose from; The Friday Pattern Company Ilford Jacket is a relaxed, drop-shoulder shape with a choice of sleeve and pockets you can mix and match. The Modern Sewing Company Over Shirt is a classic workwear layer that works in a variety of fabrics.

Heavier fabric behaves differently under the machine, and much of the class is about handling it well, from strong flat felled seams to topstitching that holds a straight line.

If you'd prefer a lighter, more traditional shirt, our Classic Shirt workshop runs in February and June.

We ask all stitchers to come with their pattern and fabric already cut out. Please wait for your preparation email before cutting, as it includes guidance on sizing and fabric.

Booking a class entitles you to 10% off all full price products in the shop (excluding books) from one week before your class starts through to the end of your course.

Skills You'll Gain

The techniques you'll learn depend on your chosen pattern and may include:

  • Constructing a collar and collar stand
  • Enclosing seams with a double yoke
  • Sleeve plackets and cuffs
  • Button bands and buttonholes
  • Interfacing collars, cuffs and bands
  • Hemming a curved shirt tail

Materials & Pattern List

The pattern is included with your booking, but you will need to bring your choice of fabric. We recommend light to medium weight woven fabrics such as our Japanese shirt weight plain cotton, printed cotton poplin or lawn for a crisp finish that will showcase the shirt's clean lines beautifully.

Cancellation Policy

Our classes are non refundable. Due our small class sizes it is very difficult to transfer your booking to a different date. If you cannot attend a class and are able to notify us at least two weeks before the class starts, it may be possible to change the date* but this is not guaranteed so please give us as much notice as possible to increase your chances. *Limited to one change only.

If you're running late, please contact us as soon as possible by email. Unfortunately, if you arrive more than 30 minutes after the class starts, we may not be able to admit you as this can disrupt the learning experience for other students.

In the event that we need to cancel a class, we will provide as much notice as possible and offer either a full refund or an alternative booking date.

Age Policy for Classes

At Ray Stitch, we'd love to welcome stitchers of all ages, but to ensure the best learning experience for everyone, we're unable to accommodate anyone under 12 in our workshops.

Young people aged 12-16 are very welcome in our classes but must be accompanied by a responsible adult (18+) throughout the entire session. The accompanying adult must book and pay for their own space in the class and participate alongside the young person. Students aged 17 and over can attend classes independently.

If you're planning to book for a young person, we recommend emailing us first so we can help guide you to the most suitable class for their age and experience level.
